Twenty six youth wrestlers competed in both Edmond and Midwest City this past weekend in two separate tournaments. Eleven open division wrestlers attended the Ted Anderson Memorial Tournament in Edmond while fifteen wrestlers attended the Midwest City Novice tournament. All in all, nine young wrestlers came home with some hardware including one championship award.

“These are two solid early season tournaments these kids competed in, and it is nice to see some awards, but more importantly, areas of individual improvement were noticed,” head coach Curtis Jurina said. “We plan on going back to the practice room to work on those areas for our next tournament.”

The individual performances included a championship award for Connor Howard in division five heavyweight. Team Guthrie also had two second place finishes in Dylan Nottingham (Division 3, 70 pounds) and Tyler Musil (Division 3, 67 pounds). Taking third place were four wrestlers: Brent Wilson (Division 5, 94 pounds), Adam Baker (Division 3, 61 pounds), Marcus Ballard (Division 3, 64 pounds) and JB Simpson (Division 3, 131 pounds). Taking fourth place home was Alex Nelson (Division 5, 94 pounds) and Jerron Rose (Division 4, 96 pounds).

Team Guthrie will be competing in Choctaw at the Ironman Open this weekend. “All the wrestlers are competing very well this year. We have a lot of first year wrestlers this year, which is very encouraging for the sport. All the coaches look forward to watching them progress throughout the year,” coach Asa Nelson said.
