Undefeated Guthrie too much for Deer Creek

It was built up as the game of the week in the metro, but the top-ranked Guthrie BlueJays did their best to down play the hype as they dominated both sides of the ball in a key district game with the Deer Creek Antlers.

Senior running back Kai Callins paced the Jays with three touchdowns and 137 rushing yards on 20 carries as Guthrie continues to remain the lone undefeated team in Class 5A with a 28-3 win in Edmond.

Guthrie (8-0, 5-0) has now won the last six meetings with Deer Creek (5-3, 3-2) and have won seven of the 9 meetings between the two schools.

The BlueJays made the game look simple on offense by running the ball right at the Antlers while on defense applied continued pressure on quarterback Caden Sander. The best offense for Deer Creek at times were the 14 penalties on Guthrie that equaled 152 yards that allowed multiple first downs.

Meanwhile, the Antlers offense could only manage 128 yards of total offense, including negative 12 yards rushing. Entering the game, Deer Creek averaged 369 yards on offene and nearly 40 points.

The Jays defense continues to turn heads by holding their opponents to now under 32 yards rushing per game. The linebackers were complimented by the ultra-aggressive defensive line and the secondary covered up receivers the entire evening.

Callins scored from 3-yards in the first quarter and again in the second from 2-yards to give the Jays a 14-0 advantage.

On the following possession, Deer Creek turned the ball over on a shotgun snap where Beau Davis was in the right spot to recover the ball and setup the third score.

On a third down play from the 12 yard line, quarterback Reed Roberts lifted the fade pass to the corner of the end zone where junior L’lliott Curry came down the score to give the Jays a 21-0 lead at the break.

Each team scored in the third quarter as the Antlers hit a 25-yard field goal and Callins scored one final time for the Jays from 27-yards out. F&M Bank Statement of the Game

The BlueJays finished with 241 yards on the ground and attempted just seven passes from Roberts, but he completed six of those, including the score to Curry.

The BlueJays will finish out the regular season with two home games, including next week with McGuinness. A win for the Jays all but secures home field advantage for the playoffs, but a loss complicates the process. Last year, the Irish embarrassed the Jays in Oklahoma City with a 32-0 blitz.
