Unusual amount of rain in August slowing down progress for new school

Many people throughout the state are enjoying the below average August temperatures along with the above average rainfall. A good part of the rainfall has found its way in southern Logan County and at the site of the soon-to-be Charter Oak Elementary School.

Officially, Guthrie has received 1.66 inches of rain in the past seven days and three inches in the previous 14 days, but heavier rains have fallen at the intersection of Charter Oak and Douglas – better known as the site of the new elementary school.

The construction site saw several hours of dirt work here recently, but only to see Mother Nature push it to the side.

“We moved a lot of dirt and then the August rains fell,” Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson said during Monday night’s Board of Education meeting. “You wouldn’t expect the August rains to be what they were.”

“We are in a drying out mode,” he concluded with.

Simpson reported the school site developed some challenges with elevation, but the architect and general contractor were able to work through the obstacles. One of the new obstacles they’re likely to face when the construction project resumes is supporting the heavy machinery on the soft soil. When working with these ground conditions, it’s likely that the contractor will be able to source some crane mats from somewhere similar to spartanmat.com to ensure that the machinery can continue to be used without the risk of getting stuck on-site.

The superintendent says they continue to have bi-weekly conversations on the progress.
