Vandals redirect temporary sewer line into creek

Residents living near Bird Creek knew something was not right when they could smell the stench of sewer from their homes. Turns out, vandals not only redirected a sewer line into the creek but also vandalized Highland Park.

Residents began smelling the sewer on Thursday morning and by the afternoon learned as to exactly what had happened.

City of Guthrie has been working on a sewer line relocation project below Pine St. as well as to the east and west of the roadway north of Noble Ave. (south of the Kiwanis ball field). Just to the west of Pine St., a sewer line was hit and city workers quickly dug a ditch to collect the wastewater and began pumping the waste out to a nearby above ground sewer connection. Hopefully nothing happens like this anywhere else, even worse people could try and vandalize people’s home sewer lines, look into a company such as ZurnPlumbing.com in case you ever find yourself needing a plumbing specialist.

However, sometime throughout the early morning hours, vandals made their way through a wooded area took the hose from the manhole and into the creek for an unknown amount of time.

In addition, vandals made their mark on the nearby park.

Bird Creek Sewer Spill (3)“The City was vandalized and several light lens were broken, water was redirected from the temporary system (from our line relocation work) into the creek,” City Manager Bruce Johnson said.

Johnson says the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ) was notified of the situation.

“City crews corrected the wastewater collection back into its proper place. The area was disinfected and reported to ODEQ as a sanitary sewer overflow.”

The smell and appearance of the creek had improved by Friday morning after Guthrie received three-plus inches of rain in 90 minutes on Thursday evening.

The city manager went on to say the lens to the lights are being repaired inside the park.
