Weather cancels Guthrie, Sand Springs

Sand Spring’s Memorial Stadium was surrounded with lightning and threatening weather throughout the entire stay for the Guthrie football team on Friday night. The Jays and Sandites had a kickoff, but never saw halftime as the game was canceled.

With 6:21 to play in the second quarter, game officials and administration staffs from both schools agreed to stop play after the sky was filled with more lightning. At the time, Sand Springs held an 18-7 lead.

Both teams were taken off the field during pre-game workouts just before 7 p.m. and were forced to stay in their locker rooms. Fans from both sides were forced under the bleachers.

The game was to begin at 7 p.m., but was delayed to a 7:30 start and again at 8 p.m. Finally, following a 2:10 weather delay, the game kicked at 9:10 p.m.

“Both our administrations and both coaching staffs decided we would get what we could, and if we couldn’t finish it, we couldn’t finish it,” Guthrie head coach Kelly Beeby said.

The non-district game will not be made up.

The game will not reflect a record for the Bluejays and will have a nine game regular season for the first time since 1959.

Once the game got going, the Jays jumped out to a 7-0 lead when senior quarterback Zane Maltz found senior wide receiver Chance Whitt over the middle for a 32-yard touchdown.

The 7-0 lead quickly went away as Sand Springs returned the kickoff back to the Jays 38-yard line and four plays later scored on a 21-yard pass. The extra point was blocked to keep it a Jays lead 7-6.

Sand Springs took the lead 12-7 with a five play 90-yard drive with another touchdown pass (27 yards). Again, the point after failed after what appeared to be a bad snap.

The Sandites were back on the board in less than four minutes with a 62 yard drive on five plays. Sand Springs failed on the two-point try to push the score 18-7.
