Work underway for the all new Banner Park

The blue print for Banner Park is starting to take shape with concrete floors and framed structures on Guthrie’s west side.

In October, the Guthrie city council approved the million dollar design for Banner Park.

Located on Warner Ave. (between 10th and 11th Street) is where the newly constructed pavilions are taking shape. The structures are being put in place by the City’s Street Department.

The project, which is being funded through the Capital Improvements Projects sales tax, will bring new amenities and options including small single-family picnic areas, a slash pad, handicap accessible playground, walking trails, parking, a Parks Department maintenance building and public restrooms.

The concrete floors for the pavilion are expected to be poured sometime this week and metal attached next week.

In the southwest corner of the park, the Banner School monument will stand as a memory of what once stood in the area.

In the early morning hours of May 9, 2014, the 79-year-old school building was engulfed in flames after being set on fire by juveniles. After a legal dispute, the City took over as the land owner.

One of the pavilions is actually being constructed on the same concrete slab where the building once stood.

The City has accepted contract bids for the asphalt trails, playground equipment and surfacing, splash pad and equipment, manufactured restroom, electrical system and parking surfacing.

The majority of the project is hopeful to be completed by mid-summer.
