Both Carl Albert and Guthrie boys basketball teams were sluggish throughout the game with misses from close range, but the Titans took advantage with a late run to pull away from the Jays in a north-south Suburban Conference game.
Both teams were dead even after the first and second quarters before the Titans opened it up in the second half en route to a 49-43 win. Guthrie falls below the .500 record at 8-9 for the season and half dropped their last three conference games while Carl Albert improves to 13-6 overall and have won five games in a row.
In a preview of the first round of the regional tournament in two weeks, the Titans used a 7-4 run in the final three minutes of the third quarter to take a 38-35 advantage into the final quarter.
Guthrie senior guard Kentrell Brothers hit the first bucket in the fourth quarter, but the Jays were shut-out for the next five minutes plus and in the process Carl Albert scored seven points to take a 10-point lead 47-37 with 3:35 remaining. Brothers scored six of his team high 14 points in the fourth quarter.
The Jays pulled within 4-points with just over a minute to play, but were unable to take advantage of short-range shots and a Titan turnover.
The 16th ranked BlueJays will be back in action Saturday evening when they travel to Deer Creek. The game was originally to be played last week, but was canceled due to the winter storm.
