Corporation Commission announces plan following earthquakes in Edmond

As promised, the Oklahoma Corporation Commission’s office has made mandatory changes to oil and gas wastewater disposal well operations just across the Logan County line. The action comes after earthquakes shook the Edmond and southern Logan County area.

The Commission’s Oil and Gas Conservation Division says there are five operating wells within 10 miles of the center of the earthquakes that rattled north Edmond last week.

Pedestal Oil Company’s well will be reduced by 50 percent. Four others, including Devon Energy, Grayhorse operating, New Dominion and Taylor R C operating will be reduced by 25 percent.

“We are working with researchers on the entire area of the state involved in the latest seismic activity to plot out where we should go from here,” said OGCD Director Tim Baker.

According to the U.S. Geological, a 4.3-magnitude quake was reported about 5:40 a.m. Tuesday and a 4.2-magnitude struck at 5:39 a.m. Friday. Both were centered near the intersection of Sooner and Covell.

“We are looking not only at the Edmond area, but the surrounding area as well, including the new seismic activity that has occurred in the Stillwater area, Baker said.”

A 3.5 magnitude earthquake struck Saturday at approximately at 2:26 p.m. in Guthrie. Its epicenter was located north of Charter Oak Rd and east of Douglas Blvd, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was 5.6 miles deep.

On New Year’s Day, Guthrie was rattled from 2.9 and 3.1 earthquakes.
