A routine call to remove hay bales from the roadway turned dangerous for a Logan County deputy when their patrol vehicle caught fire on State Highway 33.
Around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, the deputy responded to reports of hay bales obstructing the highway just west of Cooksey Road. While attempting to push the bales off the roadway, a portion became lodged underneath the deputy’s vehicle, sparking a fire.
The flames quickly spread into the truck’s engine and cab, producing thick black smoke.
The Guthrie Fire Department arrived and extinguished the fire before it could spread further. The patrol truck sustained significant damage and was towed from the scene.
For approximately 30 minutes, eastbound traffic was redirected to allow emergency crews to clear the roadway.
No injuries were reported at the scene.
