Fuel spill from downtown building closes down alley

A diesel leak from a downtown building shut down an alley Wednesday evening.

A passerby noticed liquid spewing from a vent at the AT&T building, located 111 Noble Ave., at 7:50 p.m. The liquid turned out to be diesel fuel.

According to fire department officials, a generator in the building is powered by the fuel and for some unknown reason backed up from an underground tank and spilled out a vent on the backside of the building.

The generator powers the phone system in the event of a power outage.

Emergency responders made their way inside the building to shut the flow off.

The fuel covered the building’s roof and the alley from Wentz St. to Division St.

The City of Guthrie’s Street crew brought in sand to help soak up the fuel, but AT&T was expected to bring in an environmental cleanup crew to fully secure the area. Road blocks were set up in each direction of the alley.

The Guthrie Fire Department remained on the scene until 9:30 p.m.

No injuries were reported at the scene.
