The Guthrie High School baseball team experienced both the highs and lows of postseason baseball within three days.
The Bluejays came within one win of reaching the Class 5A State Tournament before their season ended in the Newcastle Regional.
Guthrie finished the season with a 21-14 overall record and went 10-4 in district play. The Jays competed in one of the toughest districts in Class 5A, with Carl Albert, Noble, and Midwest City all advancing to the state tournament.
The regional began strong for Guthrie with a 2-1 win over Altus, followed by another 2-1 victory over Newcastle on Thursday. Senior Maddox Vaughan and junior Daelon Rice delivered standout pitching performances in the two wins.
With two chances to clinch a state tournament berth, Guthrie struggled offensively over the final two games. Newcastle defeated Altus before topping Guthrie 8-2 on Friday, forcing a winner-take-all game on Saturday.
In the final game, Newcastle jumped out to an early lead and held the Bluejays quiet offensively in a 6-1 victory to end Guthrie’s season.
