Guthrie hires girls, boys head basketball coaches

Guthrie Public Schools filled the void for their girls and boys head basketball coaches position on Monday evening.

Malcolm Roberts was named the Lady Jays head basketball coach.

With unanimous votes for both, the Board of Education named Sean Morgan the boys head coach and Malcolm Roberts the girls head coach.

Since 2010, Roberts served as the head girls basketball coach at Classen School of Advanced Studies in Oklahoma City and compiled a record of 144-46.

His 2016-17 team qualified for the state tournament for the first time in school history.

Roberts coached his daughter, Taylor, who this past season became the state’s all-time 5-on-5 scoring leader.

Prior to his time at Classen, Roberts was the head boys basketball coach at Northeast Academy for six years where he had a record of 127-56.

“Coach Roberts is a proven winner who will bring enthusiasm to our girls basketball program,” Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson said.

“We are excited at the possibilities for the Lady Jays with his leadership.”

Roberts, a Spencer, OK native, played college basketball at Austin Peay State University and later earned his B. A. degree in Psychology in 1995 and a Master’s
Degree in Education in 2015. Both degrees are from Langston University.

This past season, the Lady Jays finished the year ranked No. 12 in 5A with a record of 13-13 and finishing in the Area Tournament.

Sean Morgan will guide the Bluejays as the head coach.

For the Bluejays, the school district stayed within the district with the hire of Morgan.

Morgan served as an assistant coach for the Blujays in 2017-18.

“This will be Coach Morgan’s first head coaching assignment but he has worked under and played for some of the best in the business. During his time at
Weatherford, he worked for Tim Price who has consistently had teams that overachieved wherever he was coaching,” Simpson said.

Prior to being hired at GHS, Morgan was an assistant basketball coach for Weatherford High School from 2014-17.

A Stillwater native, Morgan played collegiately at Northern Oklahoma College in Enid where he obtained his Associates Degree. He later earned his B. S. degree in Physical
Education from Oklahoma State University in 2013.

Simpson added, “We are fortunate to have someone of Sean’s ability already on staff that knows our student-athletes.”

Guthrie struggled this past season with a 5-18 record.
