The website states, “The city of Guthrie was developed in the hours following the April 1889 Land Run. It was designated the territorial capital, then the official state capital in 1907. Legend says that the seal was stolen to make Oklahoma City the capital a few years later, but a special election was held and the voters approved the change. Today, over 1,400 acres of city property are protected as a National Historic landmark because of the architecture and heritage to the state.”
