Guthrie native John Kane made a name for himself in the biggest tournament of the year in Brazilian jiu-jitsu by capturing a silver medal.
The IBJJF Pan American Championship was held at the University of U.C Irvine in Irvine, California and hosted contestants across the globe in hopes of winning a world title.
“The energy in the building during the tournament is out of this world,” Kane told Guthrie News Page.
“It’s so electrifying watching all of the people who have trained with you all year-long cheer and cheer for you in the stands while you’re giving it your all out there.”
Brazilian jiu-jitsu, considered one of the most dominant grappling positions, is a martial art, combat sport system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting.
Despite not bringing home gold, Kane says the experience and knowledge he has gained this season will help push him for the upcoming year.
“Winning a Pan Am championship is where your dreams become reality and sets your path for the future. I may not have won a world title this year, but the experience and knowledge I gained from this showed me that how much harder I’m going to train to come back greater than ever next year.”
Kane is trained by Heath Harvey, who owns Top Tier Martial Arts here in Guthrie.
“I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish much without his help this past year,” Kane said.
