Jays season comes to an early end

Harrah, Okla. — The 2009-2010 Guthrie boys basketball season came to an abbreviated end at Harrah High School in the Class 5A area tournament.

The Jays needed just one win on either Friday, or Saturday to punch their ticket to the state tournament for the fifth straight season. Instead, they end their season with an 18-9 record.

Friday evening, Guthrie met up with El Reno for the eighth time in the last three seasons having won six of the previous seven, including last years area championship game, but the Indians controlled this game.

The Indians held on to a 48-46 win after Kentrell Brothers potential game tying shot with two seconds left fell short.

With the win, El Reno will make back-to-back state tournament appearances and play Claremore in the first round.

The Jays met up with Ardmore the following night, Saturday, with the Ardmore Tigers in a do-or-die game. Yet another familiar opponent for the Jays. Guthrie had won all five meetings in the past three seasons.

However, Ardmore picked up the win and will head to state with a 55-51 win. The very athletic Tigers will play Tulsa East Central in the first round of state.

Guthrie jumped out to an 8-4 lead, but Ardmore finished the first quarter on an 11-0 run to take a 15-8 first quarter lead and a 25-19 halftime lead over the Jays.

The Jays just like the prior night were down as many as eight points only to find themselves rallying to take the lead back, but the Jays had the lead for :13 in the entire fourth quarter against the Tigers.

Ardmore held a 54-51 lead with :10 left, but the Jays had one last opportunity to try to send the game into overtime, but were not able to get a shot off and were forced to foul.
