Lady Jays have tough day at state

The No. 1 doubles team of Brooke Powell and Paige Powell dropped their first set 6-4 to the team of Kelsey Kerr and Katelin Threet, of Grove. However, the Lady Jays responded with their own 6-4 win in the second set to send it to a third and decisive set, but Grove came away with a 6-2 win.

In their second game, the Powell duo took on Kate LeValley and Taylor Spradlin, of Duncan, defeated the ladies 6-0 and 6-1.

A season ago, the Powell’s combined to win one of three matches while playing No. 2 doubles.

This season Sarah Howells and Taylar Swarzbaugh have commanded the No. 2 doubles team and ran into a familiar opponent from Carl Albert. Tori Beechum and Skyler Nichols took advantage early and often and picked up wins of 6-2, 6-2 in the first round.

In the next round, Haley Luker and Emily McFerran, of McAlester, defeated Howells and Swarzbough 6-3, 6-1.

To no surprise, McGuinness was solid in day one and is expected to win yet another team title.
