Lady Jays win regional championship; track teams headed to state

The Guthrie High School track teams are state-bound following an impressive weekend at the Class 5A Regional Meet in Owasso.

The Lady Jays captured the regional championship with 149 points, finishing ahead of Claremore (129) and Tahlequah (101), while several Bluejays also earned state qualifications.

The state meet is set for Friday, May 16, and Saturday, May 17, at Western Heights High School.

In the girls’ 4×400 relay, Guthrie claimed first place with a time of 4:07.50, thanks to the team of Peyton Read, Haley Gallo, Madi Brooks, and Cora Leach. Leach also secured a second-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.67. Teammates Cecelia Pasimi and Taylor Mays finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

The 4×200 relay team of Gallo, Leach, Jackie Howell, and Brooks narrowly missed the top spot, finishing second by just 0.27 seconds. The same group took third in the 4×100 relay.

Madi Brooks finished second in the 200-meter dash (25.78), followed closely by Gallo in fifth (25.94) and Howell in sixth (26.23). Mary Vaughn took second in the 100-meter hurdles (17.00), while Taylor Schroder claimed second in the 1600-meter run (5:41.14), with Jaydin Alexander in fifth. Schroder also finished second in the 3200-meter run.

In the 4×800 relay, the Lady Jays placed sixth with the team of Alexander, Raley Hooper, Addison Poupard, and Read. Guthrie dominated the high jump, with Harly Chastain winning, Lily Rechlin finishing second, and Vaughan placing fifth. In the pole vault, Ryn McCormick took second, and Scout Evans came in fifth. Rechlin and Marissa Bell placed fourth and sixth, respectively, in the long jump.

On the boys’ side, Amare Watson sprinted to second place in the 100-meter dash (10.92), just 0.13 seconds behind the winner. Callon Cyphers finished fifth in the 800-meter run. Isiah Blevins earned a third-place finish in the 1600 and second in the 3200.

The boys’ 4×100 relay team of Watson, Dereon Whitehorn, Gregory Stevenson, and Zane Thomas placed third. The 4×200 relay team of Watson, Whitehorn, Stevenson, and Codie Carlock came in sixth.

In the high jump, Cade Barton took first, Dax Larsen placed sixth, and Corbin Madison finished eighth. Gavin Hood earned second in the pole vault, while Dayton McMahan finished fifth. Wyatt Silvis took sixth in the discus throw with a toss of 126-01.

Both the Lady Jays and Bluejays will look to cap off their strong seasons with standout performances at the state meet this weekend.
