A 68-year-old Logan County man has been charged with child abuse after deputies say he admitted to slapping a 3-year-old child during a domestic incident.
On the night of May 20, just before 10 p.m., Logan County deputies responded to a residence in the southern part of the county following a report of a physical altercation involving a small child. The reporting party told authorities that Richard James Ewers arrived home intoxicated after visiting a bar and became upset, reportedly because the outdoor lights had not been turned on in advance of his arrival.

Witnesses said they heard the child crying and went out on the patio to see Ewers holding the child down by their throat and choking the child.
The child was visibly upset, crying, and saying, “my face and arm” and “hit me in the face.”
Law enforcement documented the child’s injuries and stated that they matched accounts given by witnesses at the scene.
Witnesses also reported that Ewers said, “He was sorry, he had enough of him acting up.”
Deputies say Ewers admitted to drinking alcohol while also taking prescription medication, and acknowledged slapping the child, though he reportedly told deputies he “didn’t think it was too hard.”
Although Ewers denied choking the child, deputies noted possible bruising on the left side of the child’s neck near the collarbone.
Ewers was formally charged with child abuse on May 22 and remains in custody at the Logan County Jail on a $100,000 bond. Should he post bond, he has been ordered to have no contact with the alleged victim.
His next court appearance is scheduled for July 31 at 2 p.m.
