Guthrie’s Carson Olmsted and Jaxson Mayer put together an impressive run at the Class 5A State Tennis Tournament, earning a third-place finish in No. 1 doubles after entering unseeded.
Their tournament run started Friday with a straight-set victory over sixth-seeded Cascia Hall.
In the quarterfinals, Olmsted and Mayer delivered one of the tournament’s biggest wins, defeating third-seeded Heritage Hall in three sets. After dropping the opening set 3-6, the duo rallied to win the final two sets in tiebreakers. In the deciding set, they battled back from a 0-3 deficit to complete the comeback and win 7-6.
The pair’s run ended in the semifinals against second-seeded Carl Albert before bouncing back in the third-place match with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Metro Christian.
Coaches credited Carson’s serving and Jaxson’s strong net play as key factors throughout the tournament.
Guthrie also had a strong showing at No. 2 doubles with freshmen Drake Shelton and Trenton Edberg, making their first state tournament appearance.
After dropping their opening match, the ninth graders responded with a win over Tahlequah before being eliminated in the third round by Casady. The match was tightly contested, and Casady later went on to finish fifth in the tournament.
