Members of the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and the Guthrie Parks Board are seeking volunteers for Wednesday, January 16 and Thursday, Jan. 17 to help cut, haul and sink cedar trees at Liberty Lake. This process will help improve habitat at the lake.
State wildlife biologist Keith Thomas says they will look to cut and haul the trees on Wednesday and sink them into the lake on Thursday.
The trees help the habitat to stay warm while adding to their life cycle.
Without refuge, many fish remain inactive most of the day, suspending over deep water. Adding cover provides much needed nutrition for even the smallest of species, and with this the food chain will follow.
In addition, this will help fisherman – within a week or two – find their next big catch.

Tempting but I can’t smoke there
We are watching the crews sing the trees as I type this comment. I can’t help but wonder about boating/tubing/skiing with these trees and limbs all around the lake now? Can someone enlighten me? Thanks!
Katie – They chain them to a cinder block, or something similar, to assure they go to the bottom (several feet) of the lake.
I realize that is the plan…but there are branches sticking up everywhere. Maybe they take a couple of days to fully sink? We are excited for the prospect of better fishing. It is a beautiful lake! Hopefully it will all be well for the boaters as well. 🙂
