The 14th all-time meeting between Guthrie and Piedmont was quickly decided after the Jays jumped out to a 21-0 first quarter. Guthrie dominated the scoreboard, the stats, and the play on the field.

The Guthrie defense continued their solid play by shutting out their fourth opponent in five games with the 35-0 win. Teams are averaging not even a point per game (0.60) as the Jays have shut their opponents out in 19 of 20 quarters played to begin the season.

The loss is the first for Piedmont (5-1) who entered the game averaging 38 points per contest. Guthrie improves to 5-0 and 1-0 in district play and joins Carl Albert and McGuinness as the lone unbeatens in 5A-2 district action.

Piedmont finished with 54 total yards of offense and two total first downs. On the season, Guthrie has held their five opponents to 247 total yards of offense (49.4 per game).

For the Jays, senior Tariq Watson returned the opening kickoff 50 yards and on the first play from scrimmage, senior Jaylen Harper scored on a 33-yard touchdown run to give the Jays an early 7-0 lead.

The lead doubled moments later after senior Treyvon Braxton forced and recovered a fumble on Piedmont’s first offensive series. Six plays later, Harper was back in the endzone with a 6-yard run.

With a second turnover on two Wildcat offensive possessions thanks to a senior Nate Benford interception, Guthrie went up 21-0 with a 3-yard run from senior Dae’Lonte Glover.

Guthrie’s final score of the half came in the second quarter when the senior quarterback found a wide-open Blake Doles, a junior, for a 10-yard touchdown.

Sophomore Zane Thomas added a second-half score from 12 yards out in the fourth quarter.

The Bluejays finished with 262 total yards while collecting 18 first downs.

Guthrie is back on the road this week as they travel to McGuinness for a crucial district match-up. The Irish have won seven of the last eight meetings with Guthrie. The winner increases their odds of hosting a first-round playoff game.
