The Guthrie Board of Education met Monday evening for their regular scheduled monthly meeting and discussed the A-F Grade system that was given to their six school buildings.

The majority of the 75 minute meeting was aimed at the A-F school report cards with Carmen Walters, the Executive Director of Federal Programs and Elementary Education, who discussed in-depth with the state’s findings on each of the six report cards.

Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson stated they are now ready to move on from the state’s A-F scores and move forward on improving in the areas they have known for some time before the report cards were made public as well as continue to improve in the criteria where they excelled on the reports.

In his superintendent’s report, Simpson said his administrative team has done walkthroughs in each of the school buildings, with the exception of Fogarty Elementary, sitting in on classrooms.

“We had a lot of changes at the beginning of the school year and I am seeing a lot of good things. I am very encouraged by our staff and the pulse of the district,” Simpson said.

High School Principal Chris LeGrande and Junior High Principal Tim Rawls spoke to the board on their ACE Remediation Plans.

Rawls spoke of the after school and in school tutoring that is being provided while LeGrande explained the same tutoring system was in place at the high school along with other programs, including a Boot Camp.

“We will also offer a “Boot Camp” prior to the test where students will have two days of intensive learning. Teachers have identified gaps in each students learning from previous assessments and those gaps will be targeted during these two days,” LeGrande said.

The first year principal also said a summer school program is also available for students.

In other business, the board approved school board meeting dates for 2013 and agreed to school board elections for wards two and six to be held on Feb. 12, 2013 and a Runoff Election for Apr. 2, 2013. Both have four-year terms.

Jody Walker currently holds the ward two position and Gail Davis represents ward six.

The board was in executive session for 45 minutes where it is believed they discussed pending litigation, specifically Jeanette Gragg v. Guthrie Public Schools, Case No. CJ-2011-169.

According to court papers, the plaintiff (Gragg) was in a motor vehicle accident with a Guthrie Public School bus in February of 2011.

No action was taken from the board.
