Softball wins district opener; drops home debut

If you can’t win them all, you at least want the losses to be a non-district game and that was the case on Friday evening in the home opener for the Guthrie softball team. However, the girls of fall picked up the all important district win the previous night.

After the first week of the season, Guthrie holds a 3-1 overall record by concluding the week with a 5-3 win over McGuinness and falling to 6A’s Putnam City 5-1.

On Thursday, at McGuinness, Guthrie jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Madison Dutton started the inning with a single and later added a stolen base before scoring on a RBI single by Cameron Jenkins.

The lead was short-lived.

The Lady Irish scratched across three runs in the home half of the third inning by taking advantage of three Guthrie miscues to go along with two hits for their first lead of the game at 3-1.

However, young, but veteran pitcher Bailey Shaffer kept McGuinness of the board the remainder of the game.

The Lady Jays offense got going in the fifth despite collecting just two hits as McGuinness ran into pitching trouble. In the inning alone, Irish pitching allowed three walks and two hit batters.

Shaffer started things with a single and quickly landed on third base with two stolen bases. Madison Sutton and McKale Hopfer collected RBI’s despite not putting the ball in play. The inning was highlighted by a pinch hit by freshmen Trista LeGrande.

Pirates spoil home opener

Despite the sharp, new look uni’s, the Lady Jays could not rally in their home opener.

Trailing 1-0 in the fifth, Shaffer started the inning with a single and quickly scampered to second with a stolen base and moved to third on Graybeal’s fielders choice setting the table up for Sutton.

With a 1-0 count, head coach Lee Linsenmeyer gave the bunt sign and Sutton executed with perfection as she laid it down in front of the plate to score Shaffer and tie the game at 1-all. The bunt was so good that Sutton legged out the infield hit.

Unfortunately, the Pirates got the lead back in the sixth and opened the game in the seventh. The Lady Pirates scored three runs and at one time collected three straight hits as they sent eight to the plate.

Guthrie will play their next several games away from home as they travel to Southeast on Tuesday and beginning on Thursday will be involved in the Perry Tournament.

Next home game is set for Tuesday, August 21 against Deer Creek.
