The Shawnee Wolves are hopeful a move-in quarterback from Texas will be a springboard for a playoff run in Class 5A. Meanwhile, the Guthrie Bluejays are looking for win number one of the 2017 season.

The Jays are back in action following a 34-23 setback to Class 6A-II Enid while Shawnee hits the gridiron for the first time this season.

Jelsma Stadium will showcase the Jays and Wolves with a 7 p.m. kick on Friday. The game can be heard on Hot 93.7 FM and world-wide on Guthrie Sports Page and Guthrie News Page beginning at 6:30 with the pregame show. Listen on Tunein.

Guthrie has won seven of the last 12 meetings, including six of the last seven. A season ago, Guthrie escaped Shawnee with several key fourth quarter plays to win 29-26.

Shawnee head coach Billy Brown welcomes 6’2, 175 pound Heath Hunter from the state of Texas. The junior is described as having a big arm and will have two great options at wide receiver.

Trenton Skinner and Scout Cawvey return and are expected to carry the load in the passing game. Skinner, a junior, hauled in 47 catches for 510 yards and five touchdowns in 2016. Cawvey, a sophomore, finished last season with 35 receptions, 488 yards and four scores.

The running game will be commanded by junior Tre Shaw, who many believe can rush for 1,000 yards this year. In 2016, he ran the ball 111 times for 742 yards and eight touchdowns.

Up front for the Wolves on the offensive line will be four seniors led by center DJ Storie and left tackle Parker Greenwood.

On defense, Wolves will look for leadership from a pair of linebackers in Brayden McGinnis and Rhett Roach. McGinnis collected 104 tackles while Roach had 56 stops.

A season ago the Wolves qualified for the playoffs despite a 5-6 record. However, this season, Shawnee is expected to contend for the 5A-3 district title.
