A semi-truck driver stopped at a Guthrie truck stop for tire maintenance on Monday night, but rather than a quick repair he watched his truck roll away, off a hill and toward Highway 33 carrying over 43,000 pounds of coke syrup.
Just after 7:30 p.m., the driver pulled his rig up to the tire shop behind Loves Truck Stop and got out of the truck. However, the driver forgot to set the brakes and the truck began to roll away. This gaffe will have caused some damage to the truck.
The truck rolled approximately 600 feet split two trees, clipped a marquee sign, dropped off the hill and crashing into the embankment of Highway 33.
The impact sent the coke syrup crashing to the front of the trailer. Luckily, nearly all the syrup was contained inside the trailer.
Four large wrecker trucks were needed to bring the semi-truck back up the hill as the highway was shut down in both directions intermittently by law enforcement.
There were no injuries reported at the scene.
