Walk off gives Guthrie Baseball tournament championship win

The Guthrie Bluejays collected zero runs and three hits in the first five innings of the championship game in their own tourney, but all of a sudden they erupted in the sixth inning resulting in a walk off win in the seventh.

In a tie game, Jeremiah Blackmon drew a bases loaded walk to bring home the winning run giving the Bluejays a 6-5 win over the Stillwater Pioneers.

The Pioneers put three runs on the board in the first inning with the first five men reaching base. Abe Spencer singled to put runners on the corners, Riley Metzer drove in the first run with a single up the middle and later a Guthrie throwing error plated two more runs.

The Bluejays got out of the jam to end the inning when Rigo Martinez brought in a fly ball in right field and delivered a bullet to the plate to throw out CJ Edwards on the attempted tag play.

Stillwater added to their lead (4-0) with three more hits and a run in the next inning. James Avery brought home Owen Logan on a base hit to left field.

The scored stayed that way until the Jays offense could get going in the sixth.

Camden Wilcott started the inning off with a leadoff double and was followed up by walks from Matlz and Tyler Kisner to load the bases. With a drawn in infield, Blackmon reached on an error to bring home Wilcott.

Still with the bases loaded, catcher Dalton Graybeal drilled a 2-run double to minimize the Stillwater lead down to one, 4-3. Next, Mason Chavez delivered a RBI single to plate Kisner and to tie the game at 4-all. Incoming freshmen Jackson Waddell followed that with a RBI single to give the Jays the lead and needing three outs to claim the title.

However, Stillwater had a response of their own.

Avery started the inning with a walk and scored two batters later scored on a Guthrie throwing error to tie the game at 5-5. With a runner on third and one out, Chavez was able to collect a strike out and a ground ball to get out of the inning.

In the final at bat, Maltz and Braden Davenport earned 1-out walks and Kisner followed that with an infield single to load the bases. The third walk by Pioneer pitching brought in the winning run just before 11 p.m.

Kingfisher 2, Guthrie 1

The Bluejays did not have much to play for in their first game on Sunday as they had already qualified for the finals of the Guthrie Summer Baseball Classic. Meanwhile, Kingfisher was searching for their first win in the three-day event.

Due to the time limit, the Jays and Jackets played six well-played innings.

Kingfisher struck first in the top of the fourth inning with two hits, including a RBI single from Cesar Calematea to take a 1-0 lead.

Guthrie tied the game at 1-all in the fifth inning without the benefit of a base hit. Rigo Martinez, who walked, stole second base and moved to third on a fielder’s choice, scored after Zane Maltz took off on an early steal attempt. With a throw to second base, Martinez took off from third to score.

The Jackets responded in their half of the sixth inning and scored the eventual winning run with the benefit of two hits and two walks. Following a walk to load the bases, Colt Crosswhite drew the inning’s second walk to bring in the eventual winning run.

The Jays had two men reach base in their final at bat, but were unable to advance to second base.

Kingfisher ace Matt Hopkins held the Jays bats to two hits, including an infield single, while picking up four strikeouts.
