April sales tax dollars miss City’s projection; use tax continues to rise

The April sales tax dollars came in 10 percent below projections for the City of Guthrie.

For the sixth straight month, the City’s sales tax dollars are down when compared to the banner year a year ago.

The April 2019 revenue receipts were $467,691.69, which is $34,553.65 or -6.88 percent lower as compared to April 2018.

For the seven months of the current FY19 Budget Year (October through April) the cumulative sales tax revenue was down -$281,247.31 or -7.284 percent as compared to the same first seven months of the prior budget year.

Use tax revenues continue to go above and beyond when compared to last year.

The April 2019 use tax revenue receipts collected were $44,626.41. That dollar amount is up $12,204.75 for a 34.46 percent increase as compared in April 2018.

The use tax dollars are collected from online shopping, including Amazon.com and by third-party vendors selling through Amazon, which began July 1, 2018.

Use tax is sales tax levied on products purchased elsewhere and shipped into Oklahoma. Use tax also is due on major purchases, such as when a farmer orders a tractor from a national dealer in another state and has it shipped into Oklahoma.

For the seven months of the current use tax (October through April) the cumulative uses tax revenue is up +$120,267.07 or 50.85 percent as compared to the same first seven months of the previous budget year.

Overall, the City has seen a shortfall of $160,980.25 in the current fiscal year when compared to last year’s banner year.
