Former Guthrie Bluejay, Class of 2020 graduate, and current Guthrie resident Luke Morgan is officially headed to professional golf’s next stage. Morgan secured his place on the PGA Americas Tour after a strong performance at the PGA qualifier held just outside of Louisville, Kentucky.
The no-cut, 72-hole tournament brought together over 100 aspiring professional golfers from around the globe. Morgan, a former Baylor Bear, teed off Tuesday afternoon with a steady front nine that featured two birdies and two bogeys, finishing even par. What followed was a jaw-dropping stretch of 63 holes in which Morgan carded 21-under-par, without a single bogey until the final hole.
Morgan had his longtime friend and former Guthrie High School teammate, Bo Robbins of Tulsa, as his caddie.
The pair navigated the tournament with precision and discipline. As Morgan stepped up to his final hole, Robbins told him that a birdie might win the event outright. They opted for an aggressive play on a 35-foot birdie attempt, which ran 8 feet past the hole. Although Morgan missed the par save and posted a bogey on the 72nd hole, his score of 21-under-par was enough to finish in third place, easily earning a spot on the tour.
The PGA Americas Tour, often considered the Double-A level in professional golf (with Korn Ferry Tour as Triple-A), is a key proving ground for future PGA Tour players. The tour features eight events in the winter across Central and South America and another eight in the summer across Canada. Of the four qualifiers held across North America, only the top 11 finishers at each earned guaranteed status on the Canadian leg of the tour. Finishers 12–30 received provisional or alternate status.
Morgan’s qualification guarantees him status for the Canadian stops, which begin July 8. Each event features a $225,000 purse, with $45,000 going to the winner. Performances across the tour can lead to advancement to the Korn Ferry Tour, eligibility for the Latin American swing, or require requalification in future seasons.
Morgan and Robbins were the No. 1 and 2 players on what many believe to be the most successful golf team in Guthrie High School history. As freshmen, they helped lead the Jays to a third-place finish at the state tournament. They then captured back-to-back team state championships in 2018 and 2019. In 2020, their senior season began with a dominating 58-stroke victory, but the COVID-19 pandemic brought an abrupt end to what likely would have been a historic three-peat. Both were selected as 5A West All-State representatives and went on to succeed in college—Morgan at Division I Baylor University and Robbins at NAIA powerhouse Oklahoma City University.
“I am so blessed to have taken this first step,” Morgan said after his round, “but this is all this is. My ultimate goal is the PGA Tour.”
The pair plans to continue working together during future events, depending on Robbins’ work schedule and availability.
Morgan currently plays out of Guthrie Golf & Country Club as well as The Golf Club of Edmond. With his spot secured on the PGA Americas Tour, Guthrie’s own is one step closer to chasing his dream on golf’s biggest stage.
