Game Preview: Guthrie vs Piedmont

The Guthrie Bluejays come limping into week five following a 20-3 loss to Bishop McGuinness last week that ended a school record 35 consecutive wins inside Jelsma Stadium.

Guthrie is 1-2 on the year and understands they are still in the playoff hunt.

The Piedmont Wildcats enter the game winless on the season at 0-4 with losses to a quality schedule with Skiatook, Weatherford, Noble and Deer Creek. In those games combined the Wildcats have been outscored 23-147.

Piedmont made the move to Class 5A a year ago were they finished with a 3-7 season. The Wildcats last made the playoffs in 2011 and have won seven games in their last 30 ball games.

The Wildcats return five starters on offense and nine on defense.

Piedmont head coach Drew Gosson says his defense is not big, but says his defense moves well in the 4-3 scheme.

A year ago, the defense allowed 26.4 points per game and so far this year are allowing nearly 37 points a game.

The Wildcats kicker and punter Butch Hampton gives his team a boost with field position and is listed as one of the top kickers in the state. He is listed as committed to Western Michigan.

A year ago inside Jelsma Stadium, the Jays had no problems in a 48-6 win. This will be the sixth meeting between the two schools with Guthrie winning all five meetings.
