Golf facing tough competition; Jenkins records hole-in-one

The Guthrie High School golf team traveled to Ardmore for a two-day event between Dornick Hills and Lakeview courses for the Max Williamson Invitational this past weekend.

Guthrie’s top two scores once again proved to be Jack Klein and Brent Jenkins. Klein recorded an overall score of 158 with an 80 on Friday and 78 on Saturday. Jenkins shot a 74 and 86 for a club house 160. Bryce Sullivan recorded a 99 and 96, Brayden Berryman 85 and 88, and Austen McCaul came in with a 94 and 93.

Casey Fernandez of McAlester was the individual champion, shooting 70 on each course for a 140 tournament.

Klein holed a shot from 105 yards out, on Friday, on the cliff hole at Dornick Hills for an eagle. Not to be out done, Jenkins had a hole-in-one on No. 4 at Dornick Hills.

“That was the first hole-in-one (in competition) for a Guthrie golfer since I have been the coach,” head coach Ric Meshew said.

The tournament fielded 24 teams comprising some of the elite 6A schools and taking the title was Jenks, who topped Ardmore 589-603. The closest 5A team to Ardmore was Chickasha, who shot a 662. Class 6A schools Norman North (622) and Ponca City (634) and 4A’s Ada (635) rounded out the top five. The Jays finished eighth overall.

In other action this week, Jameson Benson shot a 112, on Monday afternoon, and Tylor Self recorded an 87 to finish 11th overall at Fort Cobb State Park in Anadarko. On Tuesday, it was a talented field in the 2011 Bulldog Invitational, at Kickingbird, in Edmond.

Guthrie finished 15^th of the 19 teams with a team score of 341 as the host team, Memorial, took first place by a narrow margin (285-286) over cross town rival Edmond North. The Jays were joined by private school OCS as the only non 6A schools.

Jack Klein tied for 26th overall by shooting a 78 while Brent Jenkins came in with an 86. Other BlueJay scorers were Ethan Delno 84, Caleb Davis 101, Brayden Berryman 93, Bryce Sullivan 94, and Caleb Davis with a 101.

Alec Heinen of Edmond North took top individual honors with a 68.

Guthrie will host the 5A preview this Friday morning at Cedar Valley with an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Augusta.
