Guthrie blows out Enid in season opener; defense scores five touchdowns

Not many football teams on any level can say they scored five defensive scores in one game. For the second time in recent memory, the Guthrie Bluejays have done exactly that with the latest coming Friday night in their season opening, road win in Enid.

Enid proved to be their worse enemy throughout the entire night with 11 penalties and seven turnovers, which resulted in four of the five defensive scores coming from beyond 70 yards.

On the opening drive, Enid saw a snap get past the quarterback allowing senior Campbell Leach to scoop the ball and dash in for a 46-yard touchdown.

Leach made his presence know again early in the second quarter when he stripped the ball from running back Will Phillips and allowing junior Cale Coffman to scoop and score from 70 yards out.

The Guthrie offense took awhile to get onto the field with the early defensive scores, but they made it count when they did.

Following a Plainsmen fumble on the ensuing kickoff, offensive coordinator Scott Mick dialed up a little bit of trickery on first down.

Senior quarterback spotted sophomore Josh Rains behind the line of scrimmage, who then quickly spotted a wide-open Brody Hinkle in the end zone for a 27-yard double pass score.

Following an Enid touchdown and failed two-point try, Guthrie scored two more times in the final 4:20 of the second quarter.

On the eighth play of the drive, Waddell spotted another wide open receiver. This time it was senior Marcellus Owens on an 18-yard score.

The final score of half, once again, came from the Jays defense.

With the Plainsmen trailing 29-6 and 40 seconds in the half, Enid took over at their own 23-yard line and pushed the issue looking for a score. However, after marching to the Jays 39-yard line, senior CJ Ward stepped in front of a pass for the interception and 76-yard score with just six seconds left.

The second half started eerily similar when junior Tervae Williams stepped in front of an Enid receiver for the interception and 67 yards later was in the end zone to push the score up 43-6 with 56 seconds gone by in the third quarter.

Following a misplay on a Plainsmen punt, which set up the Jays offense for a first down and goal from the 1-yard line, Waddell scored on the first play to increase the lead to 50-6.

Guthrie’s final score came early in the fourth quarter when junior JD Coonfield picked off the Plainsmen quarterback and ran back the pick six for 74 yards.

Last season in a home game with Piedmont, the Bluejays hauled in five pick sixes resulting in another blowout victory.
