The Guthrie Bluejays put on a commanding performance Thursday evening at Taft Stadium, securing a 44-8 win over John Marshall with contributions from offense, defense, and special teams.
Offensively, Guthrie racked up 310 total yards, including an impressive 272 on the ground, despite frequently starting with a short field. On the other side, the Bluejay defense was stifling, holding the Bears to 38 yards of offense, including negative 42 rushing yards. Special teams also played a pivotal role, contributing 14 points, including three field goals.
With the win, Guthrie improves to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in District 5A-2 play. John Marshall, playing without several key starters, drops to 0-4 after a tough schedule.
The Jays’ defense has allowed 16 yards on the ground in the first four games.
Junior running back led the charge on the ground, scoring twice with touchdown runs of 4 and 8 yards, finishing with 81 yards on 17 carries. Senior Kolten Carlock, who plays quarterback, running back, wide receiver, and defensive back, added two more scores—one on a rushing touchdown and another through the air.
Special teams standout Marco Meza connected on two field goals from 34 and 38 yards, while Karl Miller added a 27-yard field goal. The trio of field goals is believed to be the most since the early 1990s.
John Marshall trailed 20-0 at halftime but managed their lone score early in the fourth quarter.
Guthrie returns home next week for the first time in four weeks to host Noble, who is 0-4 on the season after falling to Lawton, 37-29.
