A Guthrie man may have said too much during a conversation with local law enforcement.
On Wednesday, a Guthrie police officer responded to a call on the west side of Guthrie regarding a report of threats, according to a social media post by the Guthrie Police Department. While taking the report, the officer learned that the reporting party, identified as William Murphy, made alarming statements about how he would respond if the individual who threatened him showed up at his house.
Murphy informed the officer that he was in possession of several firearms and that he would use them to protect himself if necessary. In the same conversation, Murphy revealed that he was a convicted felon but believed it was permissible for him to own firearms.
According to the department, the officer notified a supervisor and a criminal history check confirmed that Murphy was indeed a convicted felon, which legally prohibits him from possessing firearms. Guthrie officers, along with the Criminal Investigation Division (CID), responded to Murphy’s residence to investigate further.
Murphy cooperated with officers and allowed them to enter his home, where he showed CID the location of three shotguns and two handguns. A search warrant was subsequently granted for the residence, resulting in the seizure of the firearms, along with a quantity of marijuana.
Murphy was arrested on charges of being a convicted felon in possession of firearms and possession of marijuana. The case remains under investigation by the Guthrie Police Department.
Murphy has often been found at city council meetings encouraging police officers to address speeding concerns on the west side of town.
On Thursday, Murphy was given a $20,000 bond and as of 2 p.m. Wednesday remained behind bars inside the Logan County Jail.
