Pete Papahronis, best known locally for guiding the Guthrie Bluejays boys basketball program to back-to-back state championships in 2008 and 2009, has been named to the 2026 Putnam City Athletics Hall of Fame class.
Papahronis earned All-City honors twice as a player at Putnam City before continuing his playing career at East Central University, where he helped lead the Tigers to an NAIA national runner-up finish as a senior. He later played professionally overseas in Greece, competing for 11 seasons at a high level.
His coaching career brought him back to Oklahoma, where his most notable impact came at Guthrie. Papahronis helped lead the Bluejays to consecutive Class 5A state titles in 2008 and 2009, establishing one of the most successful runs in program history.
After coaching the Jays, Papahronis moved over to coach the Lady Jays basketball program. In total, he roamed the Guthrie bench for 11 years, including nine years with the Jays.
He later continued his coaching success at Edmond North, where he led the girls’ program to back-to-back state championships in 2022 and 2023. He remains the head coach at Edmond North today.
The Hall of Fame honor adds another milestone to a career that has spanned standout playing days, international professional experience, and multiple state championship coaching stops across Oklahoma.
