Guthrie firefighters honored for heroic rescue in January blaze

Four Guthrie firefighters were recognized earlier this month at the Guthrie City Council meeting for their heroic efforts in saving a man from a burning home.

Captain John Fairless (pictured left) of the Guthrie Fire Department presented commendations and a citation pin to the firefighters for what is known in the fire service as “getting a grab”—the successful rescue of a trapped individual from a structure fire.

The recognition stems from a January 6th fire, where the firefighters launched an aggressive interior fire attack while conducting search and rescue efforts. During their sweep of the home, they discovered an elderly man trapped inside. Without hesitation, the team safely removed him from the burning structure and transferred him to Guthrie EMS, where he was treated for smoke inhalation before being transported by ambulance for further care.

Captain Fairless commended the firefighters for their bravery and dedication, emphasizing their commitment to protecting Guthrie residents. “Their actions that night exemplify the courage and professionalism we see daily from our fire crews,” he said.

The honored firefighters, all part of Guthrie Fire Department’s Green Shift, include Lieutenant Drew Rupert, Firefighter Mike Nettles, Firefighter Ben Cunningham, and Firefighter Mason Walker

Their quick response and teamwork were instrumental in saving a life, reinforcing the critical role first responders play in the safety of the Guthrie community.
