Guthrie Slow Pitch claims first-ever district championship; regionals on the road

The Guthrie Lady Jays made history last week by capturing their first-ever district title in the program’s short history.

Hosting Bristow and Fort Gibson, the Lady Jays opened with a 10-4 victory over Bristow before securing back-to-back wins over Fort Gibson, 7-3 and 7-6, to claim the district crown.

Guthrie, who played their first ever slow pitch game in 2021, now stands at 12-10 overall and is ranked 16th in Class 5A. Their postseason journey continues as they prepare for a challenging regional tournament in Washington, where two of the four competing teams will advance to the state tournament.

The Lady Jays, led by head coach Kara Tarrant, will open regional play against the host team, Washington, who enter the tournament ranked No. 2 overall with a 23-4 record. First pitch is scheduled for noon on Thursday.

In the second game, sixth-ranked Woodward (20-2) will take on Cache (17-17) at 1:15 p.m. The two winners will face off at 2:30 p.m., with the victor earning an automatic trip to the state tournament. Meanwhile, the two losing teams will meet at 3:45 p.m., and the winner of that game will battle the loser of the 2:30 game for the final state berth.

The Class 5A state tournament is on May 6 at the Firelake Ball Fields in Shawnee.
