Incumbents Jenkins, Shaw win re-election; House District 38 heads to August runoff

Two incumbent state lawmakers secured re-election victories in Tuesday’s Republican primary election, while voters in House District 38 set up an August runoff to determine who will succeed term-limited State Representative John Pfeiffer.

Jenkins Earns Second Term in House District 33

State Representative Molly Jenkins won re-election to a second term, defeating fellow Republican B.J. Roberson.

Jenkins received 2,975 votes (56.27%) compared to 2,312 votes (43.73%) for Roberson.

CandidateVotesPercentage
Molly Jenkins2,97556.27%
B.J. Roberson2,31243.73%

House District 33 includes portions of Logan and Payne counties. Jenkins finished with a 100-vote advantage across the four Logan County precincts included in the district and carried two of those four precincts. Her largest margin came in Payne County, where she received 563 more votes than Roberson.

Jenkins will now advance to the November General Election, where she will face Democrat Max E. Burchett Jr.

Shaw Cruises to Victory in House District 32

State Representative Jim Shaw secured a convincing victory over challenger Jack Vaughan to earn a second term representing House District 32.

Shaw collected 4,024 votes (65.13%), while Vaughan received 2,154 votes (34.87%).

CandidateVotesPercentage
Jim Shaw4,02465.13%
Jack Vaughan2,15434.87%

House District 32 includes portions of Logan, Lincoln and Payne counties. With only one precinct located in Logan County, Shaw’s victory was powered by strong performances in Lincoln and Payne counties.

House District 38 Headed to Runoff

The race to replace outgoing State Representative John Pfeiffer remains undecided after no candidate received the majority needed to avoid a runoff.

The six-candidate Republican field produced the following results:

CandidateVotesPercentage
Madison Bolay2,23231.55%
Danielle Deterding1,87626.52%
Brian Hobbs93413.20%
Jim Neal71610.12%
Suzanne Callihan6779.57%
Michael Norman6409.05%

Bolay and Deterding, the top two finishers, will advance to an August runoff election.

Because no Democratic or independent candidates filed for the seat, the winner of the Republican runoff will effectively become the next representative for House District 38.

The geographically large district stretches from north of Guthrie to the Kansas border and includes portions of five counties.

Logan County voters favored Jim Neal, who received 363 votes locally. Madison Bolay finished second in the county with 300 votes, followed by Michael Norman with 284 votes.

The August runoff will determine who succeeds Pfeiffer, who is leaving office after reaching term limits.
