Local law agencies assisting with OKC protesters rally

Police officers and deputies throughout Logan County is assisting fellow officers in Oklahoma City with Sunday’s protest rally.

Sheriff Damon Devereaux tells Guthrie News Page 20 officers, including members of the SWAT team, from the county have made their way to Oklahoma City.

The local team has been split into two groups as part of their assignment.

Part of the tactical team includes the MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protective). Related article: Police add MRAP to its arsenal

Devereaux says the Logan County unit left at 2 p.m. in hopes to watch a peaceful demonstration, but will assist if violence and destructive behavior begins to break out.

Black Lives Matter scheduled a protest for 2:30 p.m. to start near the corner of Northeast 36th Street and Kelley Avenue.

On Saturday evening and into the early Sunday morning hours in Oklahoma City, 27 people were sent to jail on charges including rioting, disorderly conduct, assault with a dangerous weapon, use of offensive weapon in commission of a felony and resisting arrest.

The rally, along with several others throughout the United States, follows the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Fired Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was arrested four days after George Floyd’s fatal arrest that sparked protests. He was charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter.

Chauvin, who was fired along with three other officers who were at the scene, faces more than 12 years in prison if convicted of murder.
