After more than three decades leading the Guthrie High School choir program, longtime director Bill Perring is preparing to retire at the end of the school year. Former students and community supporters are now coming together to celebrate his legacy while creating lasting support for future choir students and directors.
An alumni concert honoring Perring is scheduled for Saturday, May 9, at 5 p.m. at First Christian Church in Guthrie. Organizers say more than 100 former choir students are expected to return to perform.
The event is also serving as a major fundraiser for the newly established Bill Perring Legacy Choir Endowment Fund. The fund was created in partnership with the Guthrie Educational Foundation and the Oklahoma City Community Foundation to provide ongoing financial support for the Guthrie High School choir program. Former student Lexi Skaggs said the goal is to create a discretionary fund that future choir directors can use for student enrichment, equipment, conferences, professional development, and unexpected program expenses.
Organizers are hoping to raise $20,000 by May 9. As of this week, approximately $10,000 has been secured toward the effort.
Supporters say the endowment is designed to ensure Perring’s dedication to music education and his impact on generations of students continues long after his retirement.
The alumni concert is open to the public.
